Important update for travelers to the United Kingdom
From 25 February 2026, the UK will require most visa-exempt travelers arriving by air, sea, or rail to hold a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before travel. This new requirement supports border security and aims to streamline entry procedures.
Who needs an ETA?
Travelers who do not require a visa to enter the UK — including nationals of the EU, United States, Canada, Australia, and other visa-exempt countries — must obtain an ETA before departure.
The ETA applies to short-term visits of up to six months, including:
- Tourism and leisure travel
- Business travel
- Short-term study
- Transit through the UK
Who is exempt?
You do not need an ETA if you:
- Hold a valid UK visa (e.g. work, study, or settlement visa)
- Are a British or Irish passport holder
Transit through the UK: what to know
Whether an ETA is required depends on how you transit the UK:
Airside transit
- No ETA is required if you remain within the international transit area and do not pass UK passport control
- Typically applies to same-terminal connections with through-checked baggage
Landside transit
- An ETA is required if you must clear UK immigration, including to:
- Collect or re-check baggage
- Change terminals
- Stay overnight before onward travel
- This applies unless you already hold a valid UK visa
